The major attractions of Chandigarh are all mainly gardens. Thus Chandigarh is often referred to as 'Garden City'. The most famous is the Rock garden and the Rose Garden. There is also a lake which frequented by tourists for a pleasant boat ride.

Rock Garden

Brain child of Nek Chand, Rock Garden is truly a wonder of the modern world. Rock has some nicely crafted figures of humans and animals which are completely made out of urban and industrial waste like broken bangles, broken porcelain items, frames, handle bars, metal wires, play marbles, auto parts etc . It covers a huge area which also includes a man made waterfall and ponds. It is situated in Sector 1 near to Capitol Complex and Sukhna Lake. From April to September, Rock garden is open from 9 AM to 1PM and 3 PM till 7 PM. And during October to March, the timing is 9 AM to 1 PM and 2 to 6 PM. It is closed on Thursdays and Public holidays.

Rose Garden

Covering an area of nearly 30 Acres, Rose Garden in Chandigarh is Asia's biggest Rose Garden. Named Zakir Gulab Bagh after the the name of former Indian President Zakir Hussain, the garden was established in the year 1967. It not only has scores of Rose varieties, the garden also has numerous medicinal value plants. Rose garden is host to an yearly festival called Rose festival which attracts more than 20,000 visitors. It is probably the biggest cultural event organized in the city.

Sukhna Lake

This is one of the most picturesque man made lakes in India. Nestling on the foot of Shivalik ranges, the beauty of this 3 sq km lake is unmatched. Created in the year 1958, Sukhna Lake is an idyllic place for a quiet family vacation. Here you can indulge in activities like boating, yachting and water skiing. The government has recognized Sukhna Lake as Wetland of importance as it attracts numerous bird species from as far as Siberia. The best time to visit this attraction is during evening time. The setting sun with all its brilliant colors create a magical atmosphere here.
