Orientation & Tourist Information

  • The town and the train station are 2 km from the beach. The post office and police aid post are just before the helipad.
  • The Bureau de Change (Ph 602749) at Temple Junction cashes travellers cheques, has STD/ISD, and bus and train timetables. It`s open daily 9 am to 10 pm
  • The Tourist Helping Centre, at the beach end of Beach Rd, organises elephant rides (full day, Rs 800) and backwater trips (full day, Rs 600).
  • There is also a privately run tourist information centre just near the post office. The centre is primarily for ticketing and tour bookings.

By Air

The closest airport from Varkala lies at Trivandrum which is around 50 km away. Taxis are available for Varkala.

By Rail

Varkala is 41 km north of Thiruvananthapuram by train (Rs 21/112 in 2nd / 1st class, 55 minutes) and just 24 km south of Kollam (Rs 18/100, 45 minutes)

By Road

There are regular buses to/from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam that stop at Temple Junction. A taxi from Thiruvananthapuram direct to Varkala costs about Rs 550 (Rs 650 from Kovalam).
