Coorg - High up the hills Situated in the southwestern part of Karnataka, it is perched on the Western Ghats at an altitude of 1100 m above sea level. Dotted with beautiful coffee and tea plantations, alluring nature trails and splendid waterfalls, it's a place good enough to be visited again and again. Nestling at a height, the climate in Coorg throughout the year is perfect. The most magical place in Coorg is Madikeri which is often referred to as 'Scotland of India'. Attractions - Quite Natural Coorg is among the most naturally beautiful places in Karnataka. Every place you visit, will be a sight to behold. Along with natural splendors, there are many monumental places as well that are worth a visit. Madikeri Madikeri is considered as the capital of Coorg region. There are many tourist attractions in Madikeri that beckons visitors. The most mesmerizing are the many coffee and tea plantations on both sides of the roads. As an attraction, the 19th century Madikeri fort is the most famous one. The natural beauty of the places another reason why tourist to Madikeri wish to spend more and more time here. Numerous waterfalls in and around the place keep the visitors engaged. From Raja's seat you can witness the most scintillating sunsets. And the calmness in the air, makes it an apt place for picnics and outings. Omkareshwara Temple Built in 1820 Omkareshwara Temple is one of the oldest structures in Coorg. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The style of temple architecture has both Islamic and Gothic styles mixed in it. You can see four minars one on all corners of the temple. It is said that the temple was built by Lingarajendra to save himself from the spirit of a Brahmin, whom he had killed for his personal reasons. He brought a Shivalinga from Kashi and consecrated it here and named it Omkareshwara. There is a large tanks in front the temple. Omkareshwara Temple is situated at a distance of 1-km form Madikeri. And is easily accessible. Nagarhole National Park Nagarhole National Park proves to be a great excursion from Coorg. Situated at a distance of 94 kilometers from Coorg, it was once the exclusive hunting ground for Mysore Rulers. Nagarhole National Park was set up in the year 1955 and covers an area of 575 sq km. Main attractions of the park are tigers. The density of tigers in the park is quite impressive. Other animals that are found here are elephants, jackals, panthers, hyenas and many reptiles. The best time to visit the park is early winters when the climate is at its pleasant most. Abbey Falls Abbey Falls are among the favored picnic spots for locales as well as families coming from nearby towns. The falls runs throughout the year and is full of water even in summers. Abbey falls are situated at a distance of 10 km from Madikeri. The falls are a great place for bird watching as well. So don't forget to carry your binoculars and cameras. It is easily accessible by road as the main road leads upto it through picturesque coffee gardens. The best time to visit Abbey falls is around November when the falls are overflowing after monsoons. Accommodation in Coorg Coorg has some good hotels that can be considered for a comfortable stay. You can find luxury hotels as well as budget hotels in Coorg. Most of the better-known hotels are all govt. approved and offer clean and hygienic stay. Few hotels also are also providing business facilities. Luxury hotels in Coorg are, Club Mahindra Kodagu Valley, Hotel Coorg International, Orange County Resort and The Camp. Getting There By Air Mangalore is the nearest airport to Coorg. It is at a distance of 136 km from here. Mangalore receives regular flights of Indian Airlines and Jet Airways. Well connected to Bangalore, it also recieves flights from Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi. From Mangalore, you can take a bus or you can hire a taxi. The drive be little more than 3 hrs. By Rail Nearest railway station is at Mysore situated at a distance of 114 km. Mysore is one of the major stations in Karnataka and has trains coming in from all the cities in India. Since Mysore and Mangalore are almost same disatance away, you can choose either of them to travel to Coorg. Hassan and Tellicheri are other options. By Road Good network of roads connect Coorg to many major cities of Karnataka. From Coorg, you can travel to places like Mysore (114 Km), Bangalore(260 Km) and Nagarhole. The Mysore-Mangalore highway crosses through here and Coorg sits exactly in between Mysore and Mangalore. Local Transportation Coorg has good number of buses that ply inside the city. There are taxis and auto rickshaws as well. To roam around in the city or for small excursions, it is better to hire a taxi for a safe and comfortable journey.
