Pahalgam - The Height of Tranquility Situated at an altitude of 2130 m, Pahalgam is town miles away from
chaos. A dream for people looking for serene moments, Pahalgam, has
made its mark as a summer retreat. The climate here remains pleasant
even in peak summers. Pahalgam is most famous as the point from where
Amarnath yatra begin. The town is located by the side of river Lidder
and is covered with thick pine and cedar forests. Attractions - Resplendence All Around Most of the attractions are a few kilometers away from Pahalgam. They actually turn out to be good excursions from the town with most important being Chandanwari, which is the starting point of Amarnath yatra. Chandanwari Chandanwari is the place from where the famous Amarnath yatra starts. Situated around 16 km from Pahalgam, Chandanwari is around 30 km away from Amarnath Cave, the abode of Lord Shiva. The yatra is undertaken every year in the month of Sawan (rain) when a Shiva linga gets naturally formed inside the cave. The way to Chandanwari is the main highlight of the place. It is really a wonderful journey. The road is covered with pine trees on both sides and there is a stream as well in between. Mamaleshwara Mamaleshwara is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which was built in 12th century during the rule of King Jayasima, if not earlier. It is only a km away from Pahalgam. This stone temple witnesses a large number of locales coming to offer their prayers. Tulian Lake Situated at an altitude of 3353 m above sea level, Tulian Lake remains frozen for most of the year. The lake is surrounded by mountains from all four sides and reaching to this lake turns out to be great adventure. One can also hire ponies to come to Tulian Lake. Aru Situated at an altitude of 2408 m, Aru is a small area full of ravishing grasslands and a small self-sufficient village. This resplendent meadow also has Lidder River with icy cold water at one side. Where to Put Up Pahalgam is a small town so don't expect a good number of hotels here. Hotel Pahalgam, a 3 star hotel and Hotel Mount View, a govt. approved hotel are the best staying options available here. Getting There By Air Nearest airport to Pahalgam is at Srinagar which is around 95 kms away. It takes around 3 hrs to cover this distance by bus. By Rail The closest rail head to Pahalgam is Jammu Tawi in Jammu. The distance between the two centers is approximately 275 km. To cover the distance, it takes at least 8 hrs of drive. By Road State transport buses run to and fro from to Srinagar. Some private players also run their luxury and general coaches from Srinagar to Pahalgam. Local Transport Buses are the major players in local transportation. But to soak in the city atmosphere, you must choose a ride in Tonga (horse-carriage) which is really special. |
