Suketi Fossil Park

Location

The Suketi Fossil Park is located at a distance of 21 km from Nahan in Himachal Pradesh. Nahan itself is situated in the district of Sirmour.

About the Suketi Fossil Park & Attractions Within

Suketi Fossil park is one of its own kind in entire Asian region since it is the only one where a park has been created at the actual site of excavation. The excavation unearthed here include fossils and skeleton of pre historic animals. Presently the park displays six sets of life size models of animal fossils. There is one of the extinct Grand Elephant (Stegodonganesa Sivatherium), one of a Hippopotamus with six incisors (Hexaprotodon-Sivalensis) and yet another one of Giant Land Tortoise (Colosschelys Atlas). The rest of the three life size model of fossil include Paramachaerdus or the Sabre Toothed tiger and Crocodilia.

These fossils are great for a paleontologists, those who study the forms of life existing in prehistoric or geologic times with the help of fossils of plants, animals and other organisms. These fossils enable the paleonthologists to retrieve the hidden facts about the evolution of pre historic times, the climate as well as the environment of that era.

Other Attractions

The surrounding area of the park is occupied by plantation fields. These plantations are carried out by the Horticulture Department and it is these plantation that make the entire atmosphere extremely pleasant.

There is also a museum that is extremely attractive. The exhibits here quiet obviously include fossils. However, apart from it, there are also numerous models, charts and paintings concerning the bygone and the current plant and animal life of the Shivalik Range.

A government run cafeteria provides the much needed refreshment for the tourists.

The park can be reached by taking up the link road Kalka-Ambala which is around 4 km from Haryana.
