The Land of Red Rivers And Blue Mountains Sprawling in an area of 78,438 sq km accounting to 2.39 % of total land area of India, Assam lies in the heart of north eastern part of the country; and is called the gateway to north east India Assam is surrounded by six other states namely Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Manipur. Together, these seven states are called seven sister states. Referred to as the land of red rivers and blue hills, Assam is nothing less than a wonder of nature. The state is dotted with dense green forests, majestic rivers like River Brahmaputra, splendid landscape, magnificent wildlife that makes every part of the state an attraction in itself. The state earlier was called as Kamarupa which was ruled by Varman dynasty, Xalostombho dynasty, Kacharis and Chutias in ancient and medieval era. The Ahoms and the Tai groups known to be the strongest of all dynasties who ruled Assam for more than 600 hundred years. The siege by Burmese king set the stage for first Anglo-Burmese war in 1826 on Assam soil. In 1838, British took total control of Assam and the state was made a part of British India Province called Bengal Presidency. Assam made steady development under British rule and became famous for its black tea. Even after Independence, Assam has been able to retain its fame as the best tea producer in the world. Guwahati is the capital city of Assam that is also the largest city of the state. With the number of attractions Guwahati has, it is tough to remove it from the throne of most visited city in Assam. Most places to visit in and around Guwahati are mainly temples and mosques. However the main attraction of the state is nearly 200 Km away from Guwahati. It is the UNESCO recognized World Heritage Site Kaziranga National Park. It is famous for the most number of one horned rhino in the world. Their population in Kaziranga is almost two third of the total population in the world. It also has the largest density of tigers in the world. There are many more wildlife parks in Assam that have grabbed our attention through their rich flora and fauna. Apart from sight seeing, there are numerous thrills to be had by indulging in numerous adventure sports like trekking, aerosports and river rafting. The most alluring fact about Assam is that, many of its attraction are still under wraps and are yet to be explored by tourists.
