Sometimes referred to as 'City of Destiny' called as Vizag, Visakhapatnam is not only an important city for Andhra Pradesh, it holds a great position in context of the whole country. Vizag has the most advanced and one of the biggest ports of India. Visakhapatnam used to be a small fishing village before the British chose the city for constructing a port that will connect India to Central Province. It is the only natural harbor on the eastern coast of India. In 1940, Scindia Steam Navigation Co. was set up which later came to be known as Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. This is the oldest shipyard in India. The city is the administrative headquarters of Visakhapatnam district and is also the center of Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. There are two international cricket stadiums in the city that bring in many sports lovers during games.
Perched in the Eastern Ghats, Visakhapatnam is around 650 km northeast of Hyderabad. Dotted with some exquisite lakes and beaches it is one of the most visited cities of Andhra Pradesh. The hill is named after the deity as locales believe that there was a Lord Shiva Temple here. The statues are around 40 ft tall. There is water gushing out from the statue which symbolizes River Ganga. Other attractions are a replica of Titanic ship which is a great view point and a floral clock. Here, you can indulge in a lot of activities like gliding into the open skies and accompanying kids in the Children's Park. There are many other viewpoints from where you can get a bird's eye view of Visakhapatnam. The sight will leave you completely mesmerized. There is an art gallery as well.
Ramakrishna Beach is among the most famous beaches in Andhra Pradesh. This also is the liveliest of all. It is the favorite spot for locales to spend a quite evening. You will see people sit around on benches or take a walk alongside the sea. Apart from sunbathing and surfing not many activities can be indulged in here. Though there are few private players who are thinking of introducing more watersports. You can also ask a fisherman to take you into deep sea for Angling. Though there is a risk of fishermen charging you high. Although it is totally worth it. There is a famous Kali Temple on the beach which is a must visit. It is also famous for a Submarine museum which is first of its Kind in South Asia.
Situated around 8 Km from Visakhapatnam, Rishikonda Beach is a perfect holiday spot away from the chaos of a city. The beach is a perfect place for indulging in swimming as the water here is far more calmer and predictable. Rishikonda beach is not a very busy beach and sees only a few locales during the weekdays. Though the number of locales and tourists coming to the beach is far greater during weekends. You will see a lot of people indulging in water skiing and wind surfing. The place and the weather are perfect for such activities so don't think twice, just enjoy the experience.
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is situated amidst picturesque setting of eastern Ghats on three sides and Bay of Bengal on the fourth. The park, named after the former Prime minister of India, Mrs Indira Gandhi, was thrown open to public in the year 1977. The park covers an area of around 625 acres and is neatly divided into different sections according to animals. There are sections for primates, carnivores, small carnivores, mammals, reptiles and birds. There are more than 80 species of animals in the zoo with around 800 animals. The main animals are common langur, tigers, lions, wolves, rhesus monkey. There are number of bird species too like grey pelicans, painted stork, peacocks, pied hornbills and many more. It is situated on NH 5 around four Km from Visakhapatnam railway station. You can hire a taxi to go to the zoo from the station.
