Not many festivals are celebrated extravagantly on the Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago. However, the few that are celebrated here, give you a complete look inside the various cultures that are prevalent in Andaman and Nicobar. Even if you are just a traveler to Andaman and Nicobar islands, you virtually end up being a part of the festivals here. Janamashtami is the most visible festival of all that are celebrated here.

Janamashtami

The Janmashtami Festival is the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna. Devotional songs and hymns are sung in devotion to Lord Krishna. Homes of the devotees are painted and nicelydecorated with lights and flowers. The main attraction of the night is the Raas Leelas or plays enacting the life of Lord Krishna which are organized by locales. Devotees generally keep a fast till midnight after which the special food that is offered to the deity and shared among the devotees. It is a completely vegetarian cuisine that is served.

Island Tourism Festival

Island Tourism Festival is a 10-day festival that which are full of events ranging from dance to drama. There are many Exhibitions, and art displays along with added attraction of aqua sports and para sailing. One can get the feel of splendid culture of Andaman and Nicobar, their languages, religion and customs and beliefs during these 10 days. The fesetivals in organized mainly during December and January by Andaman and Nicobar administration every year. The main motive of this festival is to promote Andaman and Nicobar islands as a tourism friendly destination.

Subhash Mela

Subhash Mela is organized every year during January. It is celebrated to commemorate birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The festival continues for a complete week which is attended by not only locales but artists from other countries as well. One could enjoy numerous cultural programmes during this beautiful fair.
